Hey all. I remember a while back reading somewhere, that you can order a thingy that goes over you microwave, dryer, washer, and so on, to label it? From what I remember, when you buy your appliances you can order a face place thingy? Has anyone else ever heard of this. I guess my question is, is there certain companies that do this? Yeah, if anyone knows anything about this, please let me know. hehehe I have been going crazy trying to find the post. hehehe ! smiles!

do you want to label them with braille or large print or what?
If you want ot use braille, just buy some Dymo tape from the American Printing House for the Blind, braille abbreviated versions of the controls, and stick them on in the right places.

I heard a long time ago that Whirlpool would do that, but I don't know if that is still the case.

does anyone know any other companies that do it?

I had heard about contacting the manufacturer and that some of them have braille templets. good luck.

Yeah, I would just try to contact Whirlpool and others and see what they say. Other than contacting different appliance companies, you might be able to get some info about that by sending e-mails to some of the companies that sell products for the blind such as ILA and Maxi Aids to see if they have any suggestions. In addition, have you heard about the talking microwave from Hamilton Beach? Someone posted on here about it recently, and I've received e-mails about it from others. I've heard that they are still available but seling out fast from most places.

Becky,
I have that Hamilton Beach TEMO microwave. I purchased it from Wal-mart. It is a great mainstream product. OK it doesn't speak the numbers when turning the dial, but just feeling the clicks as you turn is enough for me. And for the price how can one beat it, from wal-mart the final cost for me was $99.22, cost with tax and shipping and handling. OK sorry for this off the topice commercial, now back to your regularly scheduled topic.

Good commercial. LOL.

Shea, let us know what you find out about appliances and companies that provide Braille templates. I might be in the market for a new oven in the near future.

Those microwaves are selling fast in my area. As far as labeling goes the rehab center in my area did it for me. You may also want to check into that option.

All the suggestions have been good. I think Amana has some templates, but I'm not sure any more. I think that NFB did some articles in the Braille Monitor on this subject a year or so ago. Might be worth checking out their website.

I know GE offers those templates for all of their microwaves. It took me forever to hunt down the info. I have it at work and can email it to you or post it here. It was a few years ago so I'd have to verify the # and that they still do it. They have their own accessibility department (or used to) and were very helpful when I approached them with questions. As for a microwave, why pay $99, I got one at Wal-Mart, very basic one, for $35, much better deal, got an above-stove one for $200 at Home Depo but it had to be done for the kitchen to look nice.
Congrats on the new house *smiles*
cheers

I just thought of this. I heard a long time ago that the local gas company can do your stove but I'm guessing if it's only gas but not sure if that's still true of them.

wow templates, they sound cool. in the u k, you can get full talking microwaves, they have buttons that talk, the lot. i haven't got one yet, we use a dial one at home, but when i move, i will be.

Post 16 by shea (number one pulse checking chicky) on Wednesday, 11-Oct-2006 20:24:31

Thanks for all your suggestions. I called around and whirlpool does still do the templates. After you buy your appliance, you call the one eight hundred number and give them your model numver. They will send you out a braille template. They do it for most of there appliances, and if they dont' have one for the one you got, they will look into having one made for you. They were really helpful. I also called frigidaire, they were no help what so ever. They don't do anything like this. I asked if there was someone I could talk to so I could recommend this, I was told they meaning the makers don't talk to the consumers. So yeah, We definately arent' going with them! hehehe. I told her I would be sure to pass this on. I don't think she cared for that, but oh well. hehehe Thanks for the congrast B. We too baught the over the hood microwave. Thanks again all. Shea

I'm glad to hear Whirlpool is still doing this. It was probably five or six years ago that I heard they did, so I'm glad it's still the case. Now have fun picking out your appliances Shea and Dan.
